Abstract
An unsuccessful search has been conducted for OH maser emission from six optically identified carbon stars having excess 60-micron emission, pursuant to the expectation of such OH emissions in the oxygen-rich circumstellar envelopes around carbon stars envisioned by the evolutionary asymptotic giant branch (AGB) models proposed by Willems and de Jong (1986, 1988). The models are called into question not only by these negative results, but by arguments relating to the evolutionary timescale for AGBs and the properties of S-type stars. A reply by de Jong is included.
